Have you shipped a million of those yet?!

Today was my first day of employment in over 7 months. It took moving (temporarily) from Portland for me to finally get hired and I’m pretty bitter about that. That being said today was interesting. I’ve taken a considerable step down into a job, which is a large leap back from having a career for the past ten years.

It’s a near impossibility for me to not come off sounding arrogant about my thoughts today, so please accept my up-front apology.

It is interesting to see how such small things can hinder people’s efficiency and it’s even more interesting to see how their patterns of routine force them into lethargy. They’d rather continue in mediocrity than resolve the conflicts these small things create and begin to excel. I won’t say the intelligence doesn’t exist in the people doing the job I’m taking on – it does. However, they simply survive day-to-day and think no longer of the future than what it should bring them, not what they themselves can do to make it better. They don’t assess the steps they take in their job and just how often they retrace them out of habit and cripple themselves in doing so.

I’ve read about the implementation of Six Sigma and seen it put to action, but always more on the level I’ve been surrounded by: management. I’ve never seen just how under utilized the smallest prole could benefit from some assessment on a singular level. I understand that is a great measure of the Six Sigma plan, but again – I’ve never seen the grass-roots affects.

It’s going to be interesting to see how my work here will play out over the next month and just how much I can make this branch of the company grow. At first glance, it seems easy and quite simple – but I’ve not jumped into the personal politics in the building yet.

We shall see.

  3. Hey, since MySpace DOES suck, I’m going to post the message I was going to leave there, here, regarding your association with hot Shatner/Iman action and me…: “If Kirk, a man at his age, still can “make out” with Iman, back in 1991, well then, I’m honored that you’d think of me. Obviously, I’m going to be dead sexy at 70 years old.” This certainly has nothing to do with you being able to get a job, but rather the fact that you watch Star Trek in the middle of the night, as I do, occasionally. Congratulations on the job!

  5. Myspace does indeed: suck. I sincerely do not understand how that site took off the way it did. The technology under it’s hood is an embarassment.

Welcome to my world. “It is interesting to see how such small things can hinder people’s efficiency and it’s even more interesting to see how their patterns of routine force them into lethargy.” You should try working with people that are 1 year or less from retirement. I was told guys think about sex every 30 seconds. Well, when a guy is soon to retire, it’s sex every 30 seconds and retirement every 15. Nothing gets done.

I’m trying to figure out a cool gravatar like Johnny, Batboy, or Z’s massive finger, but I don’t think it can be done.
