This is why I’m hot…

I was just watching TV and saw some ad for a ringtone by some generic hip hop artist whose song is called “This Is Why I’m Hot”. It might just be me, but if you have to make a song telling people why you’re so fuckin cool or “hot”, chances are you’re neither. Time to lay down your ego and take your marginally talented ass to the train station back to reality, homie. Don’t know who ya are, don’t care. I Just know that if you have to advertise how awesome you are, you’re a fuckin tool, period.

Virginia Tech Shootings

My heart goes out to all the victims of today’s tragedy on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. I can’t imagine what could inspire such a reign of terror against young students. My sincerest condolences to all involved.

I’d like to take a minute to discuss the news coverage of this tragedy today. I’ve been watching CNN off and on and their continuing coverage of the shootings there. I have to say I’m a little disgusted about the remorseless drive to get ratings. There is a video, shot by a student on his phone/cam, that CNN has been playing repeatedly all day. The video isn’t so much about what you see, it’s mainly the sounds of gunfire and chaos. I don’t blame the student for shooting the video, at all. A few moments ago, CNN ran the video again, on a split screen and on the opposite side of the screen, they did a “Shots Fired” count that rose as the sounds flared in the video.

Now the reason that this bothers me is that the families of the wounded and dead don’t need to hear or see that video on repeat for 10 minutes, wondering which of the shots fired was the one that killed or wounded their child. That’s fucked up. I think CNN, since that’s the only news outlet I’ve been tuning into for coverage of it, should try to be a little more tactful in their coverage. It may be a high-ratings story, but there are HUNDREDS of people involved in this whose feelings should be taken into consideration. They are the most affected, but the least considered in the scramble for “exclusive” coverage.

Again, my heart and thoughts go out to everyone involved in today’s horrific and pointless tragedy. I can’t begin to imagine your pain. I can only hope your recoveries are quick and your comfort firm. Take care of each other and know that people are thinking of you and are deeply saddened by your losses.
